Dorinda Mottlesby
Painter of Abstract Realism
Introduction
Dorinda Mottlesby is a celebrated abstract realist known for blending dreamlike textures with oddly specific objects, like toasters and umbrellas. Her painting “Cantaloupe Sunrise with Suspicion” was once described as “emotionally confusing in the best way.” She gained global fame when one of her canvases was mistaken for a magic portal during a gallery show in Paris.
Early Life
Dorinda was born on March 2, 1964, in Splatterville, Maine. As a child, she painted on everything—including her bedroom ceiling, the family dog, and one unfortunate uncle. Her love of unusual color combinations began when she accidentally dipped her cereal spoon into green paint.
Later Years
Dorinda continues to create new work in her mountaintop studio made entirely of recycled canvases. She also mentors young artists and gives lectures titled “Why Bananas Belong in Landscape Art.” Recently, she launched a clothing line based on her most confusing paintings.
Contributions
Dorinda is credited with bringing humor and surrealism into serious art spaces. Her style challenged traditional forms and inspired a movement known as “Oops School.” Critics admire her ability to make confusion look classy.
