Sharla Nibbs
Scented Fashion Designer
Introduction
Sharla Nibbs became a household name (in very specific households) for inventing a line of scented gloves designed to offer emotional support. Her products bridged aromatherapy and fashion in a way never attempted.. probably for good reason.
Early Life
Sharla was born on September 3, 1988, in Bar Harbor, Maine. Her ultra-sensitive sense of smell often overwhelmed her in childhood, leading to incidents involving potpourri fainting. By high school, she was mixing perfume oils into mittens and rating her moods by scent.
Later Years
Sharla launched her “Sniff & Soothe” glove line in 2012. The line included scents like “Fresh Start (lemongrass and apology)” and “Closure (cedarwood and passive aggression).” She retired in 2019 after her gloves became so popular with teens that some schools had to ban them in class. As of 2025, she is alive and working on a glove-based musical.
Contributions
Though short-lived, Sharla’s glove line paved the way for sensory fashion and is occasionally referenced in design theory classes. She also helped destigmatize olfactory anxiety and founded the “Hug With Hands” foundation.
Fun Facts
Her favorite glove scent was “Optimism & Cinnamon.”
She once pitched a smell-based dating show titled Sniff First, Ask Later.
